PILOT SUNGLASSES

Sunglasses for the cockpit differ from sunglasses for the beach in three ways: they must not dim instrument displays, they have to sit under a headset for hours without pressing, and they need to filter UV reliably as altitude increases. Our six models are built around those three points.

UV400 protection optics

Six models, one core

Every solaero frame is built around the same core: beta-titanium, UV400 lenses in filter category 3, anti-reflective and scratch-resistant, deliberately non-polarised. What differs is the shape.

CAPTÆN and STRÆTOS are the larger frames — teardrop and squared lines, both 100 % beta-titanium, 20 and 19 grams. HÆLO is the finest and, at 17 grams, the lightest in our collection. NOMÆD, VÆCTOR and SKYMÆSTER pair an acetate front with the titanium core: round, trapezoid and with a browline brow.

All models are cut unisex, with lens widths from 49 to 58 millimetres and a uniform temple length of 145 millimetres. Full measurements appear on every product page — measured, not rounded.

Why our pilot sunglasses are not polarised

Most sunglasses sold as pilot eyewear are polarised. In a cockpit that is a disadvantage: LCD and LED displays contain polarising filters of their own, and two filters stacked can dim the display depending on viewing angle. The FAA advises pilots against polarised lenses in its vision guidance. Not a ban, but a recommendation.

Our lenses are therefore non-polarised. Through filter category 3 they filter up to 85 % of visible light and block UV radiation up to 400 nanometres.

The temple is the real problem

A headset presses the temple against the side of the head. After two hours you notice it; after six it becomes the whole story. Our temples are beta-titanium: flexible enough to adapt to the shape of your head, with enough elastic recovery to hold that shape. Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, because eight hours of skin contact shouldn't be a compromise.

Which model for the cockpit

CAPTÆN is the classic teardrop, 20 grams, with the largest field of view in the collection at 49.5 mm lens height. STRÆTOS sets squared lines against it, 19 grams. HÆLO at 17 grams is the lightest frame and the narrowest choice. All three have fronts and temples in 100 % beta-titanium.
