NON-POLARISED SUNGLASSES

Polarisation gilt als Qualitätsmerkmal. In manchen Situationen ist sie das Gegenteil. Alle sechs solaero-Modelle sind bewusst nicht polarisiert.

When polarisation gets in the way

A polarising filter blocks light of one particular orientation. That reduces glare off water and wet road surfaces — which is exactly why it is popular.

For pilots there is more: polarised lenses can dampen the glint of sunlight off other aircraft and reveal stress patterns in laminated windscreens. The FAA therefore advises pilots against polarised lenses — without banning them.

The problem starts with screens.

A headset presses the temple against the side of the head. After two hours you notice it; after six it becomes the whole story. Our temples are beta-titanium: flexible enough to adapt to the shape of your head, with enough elastic recovery to hold that shape. Hypoallergenic and nickel-free, because eight hours of skin contact shouldn't be a compromise.

LCD and LED displays contain polarising filters of their own. Add a second filter and the two can cancel each other out depending on viewing angle: the display goes dim or black. This affects cockpit instruments, car navigation screens, fuel pump terminals and smartphone displays.

How we reduce glare instead

Through tint. Our nylon lenses are filter category 3 to EN ISO 12312-1 and filter up to 85 % of visible light. Add an anti-reflective coating on the rear surface, which cuts stray light from behind, and UV400 protection against the invisible part.

Tint and UV protection are two different things, incidentally: the filter category governs visible light, UV400 the range up to 400 nanometres. A dark frame without UV protection is worse than none, because the pupil widens.
